From October 12 to 15, the 6th Youth Geoscience Forum was held in Xining City, Qinghai Province. The conference was hosted by the Council of the Youth Geoscience Forum and the Geoscience branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences Youth Innovation Promotion Association, organized by Qinghai Salt Lake Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Northwest Institute of Ecological Environment and Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Liu Xiangjun, associate researcher of ISL, is the chairman of the conference. More than 1,400 young scientists and graduate students from different universities and research institutes across the country participated in the geoscience forum. The forum has 19 themes, more than 100 topics, and more than 1,100 academic reports.

The opening ceremony of the conference was held on the morning of October 13th at the Wanda Ka Wah Hotel Conference Center in Xining. Professor Feng Qi, Party Secretary of the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Wu Zhijian, deputy director of ISL, and Professor Yan Hong, the director of the Youth Geosciences Forum, attended the opening ceremony and delivered separate speeches. Professor Wang Jianping, the director of the Salt Lake Geology and Environment Laboratory of ISL, presided over the opening ceremony of the conference.

The forum announced the winners of the 5th Youth Geoscience Forum Excellent Graduate Thesis Award, elected the council, vice chairman and chairman of the 3rd Youth Geoscience Forum, and awarded the special contribution award to the directors who has made outstanding contributions in the development of the Youth Geoscience Forum. Academician Zheng Mianping from the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Professor Feng Qi from the Northwest Institute of Ecological Environment and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Shen Chuanzhou from Taiwan University, Professor Tang Chunan from Dalian University of Technology, and Professor Lai Zhongping from Shantou University respectively gave a special report. Professor Nie Junsheng of Lanzhou University, Professor Li Xiangzhong of Yunnan University, Professor Li Zongsheng of the Northwest Institute of Ecological Environment and Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Jiang Lei of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences respectively made an excellent youth report.

The 7th Youth Geoscience Forum will be held in Guiyang, Guizhou Province in 2020, and will be hosted by the Guiyang Geochemical Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
